MARIO OF MONACO
Mario Del Monaco (Florence, July 27, 1915 - Mestre, 16 October 1982) was an Italian tenor.
It is considered one of the most representative and popular tenors of the fifties and sixties.
He was born to a Neapolitan father, who played for some time the music critic in New York, and Florentine mother with Sicilian origins, he possessed a soprano voice, and he called: my first muse.
Passionate about painting and sculpture, also graduated from the School of Art in Pesaro. In 1941 he married Rina Fedora Filipinos, known at school in Rome. He debuted in Cagli in 1939 in Cavalleria rusticana, while the first success dates back to December 31, 1940 in Madama Butterfly at the Teatro Puccini in Milan. After a period of irregular activities due to the war, from 1945 the career took off: in 1946 debuted at the Arena di Verona in Aida and there was the international debut in London (Tosca and Pagliacci), in 1947 at the Rome Opera (Carmen and Cavalleria rusticana) and in 1949 at La Scala in Andrea Chénier. A turning point was the debut in 1950 at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Verdi's Otello, a role to which indissolubly linked his name.
