NATURAL RESERVE FICUZZA WOOD
The Natural Reserve Ficuzza Wood, Busambra Rocca, Cappelliere Wood and Gorgo del Drago is a protected natural area of the Sicilian Region, established by Decree No. assessoriale. 365/44 of 26 July 2000, in the city of Palermo subway. From 2013 is ricompresa within the Sikelian Mountains Park.
The reserve covers an area of about 7,398 hectares (approximately 5334 ha of real reserve and its 2064 and has pre-reserve), which falls in the towns of Monreale, Godrano, Mezzojuso, Marineo and Corleone. The area is dominated by the limestone massif of Busambra Rocca (1613 m) which delimits the territory to the south of the reserve, which lies to the north of the Forest of Ficuzza and the adjacent Cappelliere Wood, two large areas of Mediterranean evergreen forest separate from the road that connects the center of Godrano to SS 118.
The reserve is rich in rivers of torrential character, which form different natural lakes, so-called "eddies". On the north-eastern boundary of the reserve it is finally Scanzano Lake, or Lady of Grace Lake, a reservoir obtained by the Eleuterio river dam.
Eddy is a pond, usually temporary, with flooded winter and spring and summer dry phase. The best known of the Ficuzza Wood natural or semi-natural whirlpools are two: the Gorgo Lungo and Gorgo Tondo.
