LAKE SCANNO AQUILA
The lake originated by a landslide fell from Monte Rava and obstructed the course of the rate (the river).
The cause of this geological event was long attributed, as claimed by the Roman historian Livy, the earthquake in 217 BC
According to recent studies, the landslide occurred about 12,800 years ago, towards the end of the last Ice Age, or already in the post-glacial.
The lake has an area of about one square kilometer and a depth of about 32 meters. Its blue-green color is due to the presence of algae and microalgae, the chemical composition of the water (essentially linked to that of the lime constituents the reservoir rocks) and, finally, to the reflection of the surrounding vegetation.
The main (and only) course of tributary water is the rate, while lacking stable, active surface emissaries instead with karst mode and connecting the lake with the Sagittarius (River) and the Sagittarius Gole.
Among the fish you are: trout, tench, eels, rudd, perch, whitefish, pike, catfish and carp while among the birds there are real coots and mallards.
