THE STAIR OF TURCHI A REALMONTE AGRIGENTO
Scala dei Turchi is a rock face (cliff) which rises above the sea along the coast of Realmonte and Porto Empedocle, near Agrigento. It has become a tourist attraction in time for both the singularity of the cliff, white and peculiar forms, whether as a result of the popularity gained by the novels starring Inspector Montalbano written by the writer empedoclino Andrea Camilleri, where these places are mentioned country the Commissioner, to be framed with Porto Empedocle.
The scale consists of marl, a sedimentary rock of limestone and clay, with a distinctive pure white color. This unique aspect of the cliff stands in the middle between two sandy beaches, and access must proceed along the coast and climb a hill resembling a huge natural staircase of limestone.
Scala dei Turchi has an undulating and irregular shape, with no harsh lines but sweet and rounded. The name comes from the past of piracy raids by the Saracens, Arab nations and, by convention, Turkish; Turkish pirates, in fact, found shelter in this area less windswept and representing a safer landing.
