THE ARAGONESE CASTLE
The Aragonese Castle is located in the highest part of town, overlooking Piazza Castello from western and northern sides; the other two sides of the originally free prospettavano built on the slope of the Mira hill today are occupied by private buildings.
For its construction concept is identified among the castles of Frederick facility, despite dates from the late fourteenth century. The regularity of the volumes and large surfaces without openings emphasize, from the architectural point of view, the defensive function rather than residential. Exceptions seven battlements on the south side that have only decorative function, given the fact that date back to the nineteenth century or so.
The four towers in defense of the fortress have a rather squat, which suggests that the current height is not the original one, plus also the cover system is not original.
The construction of the Aragonese Castle is dated between 1392 and 1396, attributed to the King of Sicily Martin the Younger. These built the castle as a venue for his charge that avoided a return to anarchy and the emphasis was on power of the king on the feudal lords.
Since 1438 you do not have historical information on the castle until 1812, when the law was passed suppression castellanie.
Since then the building, until a few years ago, it was used as a prison. In this time it has undergone major alterations, especially in the interior, due to its intended use.
