The Mercogliano Antiquarium

The Antiquarium was opened on April 18, 2009 at the eleventh Cultural Week organised by the Ministry of Heritage and Culture. It is located in the crypt of the Church of the Immaculate Conception in the ancient village of Capocastello. The crypt has been restored by the Superintendence for Archaeological Heritage of Salerno, Avellino and Benevento with POR2000/2006 of the PIT "Parco Regionale del Partenio", in accordance with the Superintendence BAPPSAE, the City of Mercogliano, the Diocese of Montevergine and Avellino. The crypt consists of two adjoining rooms both with a clay floor and roof. The walls have a texture of the local stones and the building reveals the close connection with the rock in accordance to a recurrent feature in many homes in the historic center of Capocastello. In the second room, there are still remnants of the “scolatoi”, on which the dead were placed and a pillar of stone and lime, made in an undeterminable time period to support the burden of the altar which is still lies in the Church.
