The wines of the province of Catanzaro
Edited by Giancarlo Rafele, sommeliers, provincial delegate AIS (Italian Sommelier Association)
Within the territory of the province of Catanzaro, there are three Appellations of Origin.
The first name (Lamezia) is found in the plain of Lamezia Terme and includes part of the administrative territory of the municipalities of Curinga, Falerna Feroleto Ancient Gizzeria, Lamezia Terme, Maida, Pianopoli, San Pietro a Maida. The authorized grape varieties are mainly for White, from Greek white Trebbiano Toscano and Malvasia Bianca; while for the Red, from Nerello Mascalese Gaglioppo and Greek Black.
The other Doc (Scavigna) includes two municipalities with a strong wine, that Nocera Terinese and Falerna. The bases are composed mainly of the grape variety, for White, from Trebbiano Toscano, Chardonnay, Malvasia Bianca and White Greek; while for the Red, from Gaglioppo and Nerello hood.
The third and last name (Savuto) is shared with the Province of Cosenza. It grows in the valley and includes part of the territory of the municipalities of Conflenti, Martirano Lombardo, Martirano Old, Motta S. Lucia, Nocera Terinese, San Mango d'Aquino. The vines are allowed, mainly Gaglioppo, the Greek Black and Nerello Cappuccio.
In the last decade or so, the younger generation of those who are the oldest companies and new businesses, thanks to planting patterns that maximize the density per hectare and techniques that minimize, however, the yield per plant, have begun to produce wines that are able to deal with the excellent products from other regions and to be appreciated in Italy and abroad.
Three companies with decades of experience, a young but highly successful business enterprise, a "special" that produces a wine that is good for children. These tokens on which to focus for the development of wine in our province.
We avoided to describe the wines through the data sheets provided by the companies themselves or by specialized guides. It would have been difficult to verify and unverified information. Producers, on the other hand, speak only through their wines. There seems little?
House Nilla
Actually this is not a winery, but a specialized center for children and adolescents who are victims of sexual abuse and serious ill-treatment to meet the occupational needs and autonomy of the girls coming of age who can not return to their family, he began a collaboration with the Tramontana Winery Wines that put at their disposal two vineyards, one in Sambatello of Reggio Calabria and the other in Casignana of White. Children and girls participate enthusiastically in all phases of work, both in the vineyard and in the winery. For the little ones is a game that teaches to love, to the greatest job and start working autonomy. For all, the return of the smile of the eyes and the soul of the sun. For this reason, House Nilla produces wines that, paradoxically, good for children.
